Walk your way to better health

Monday 22nd May 2017

Walk your way to better health and come and enjoy a Suffolk Glamping Experience at the same time. The benefits of immersing yourself in a woodland setting are well-documented. From digital detoxing to de-stressing from the rigours of normal life; relaxing and soaking up the sights and sounds of Mother Nature are imperative for bodily cohesion!
The days are getting longer, the weather is getting better… and more studies are emerging about the positive impact that walking can have on our overall health.

To coincide with The Suffolk Walking Festival, we thought we’d give you a taste of the wonderful walks you can find in the beautiful Suffolk countryside here at West Stow Pods.

1. St Edmund Way

A route across Suffolk, using the Stour Valley Path to Sudbury and Long Melford and then going via Lavenham and Little Welnetham to Bury St Edmunds, along the waymarked Lark Valley Path to the Icknield Way Path at West Stow before striking over the Brecks to Thetford and the Hereward Way.

2. Lark Valley walk

The Lark Valley Path is a sign-posted walk between Mildenhall and Bury St Edmunds. It includes riverside, woodland, heathland and parkland sections, including West Stow Country Park, Culford Hall and Lackford Wildfowl Reserve.

3. Culford walk

A shorter option, keep an eye out for the various habitats and species along the way. A fantastic circular walk around the school. The lakeside walk is truly spectacular.

Here are a few reasons why you’ll be pleased you reached for the walking boots and not the TV remote…

1. Walking helps you lose weight

You don’t have to walk for miles to start seeing results. You’ll burn an average of 150 calories by walking at 4mph for 30 minutes. Swap that packet of crisps for a walk and you’ll not only start to look great, you’ll feel great! And if you walk quickly, you can burn as many calories as running without the risk of damage to your discs in your back!

Which leads us to the next point…

2. Walking makes you happy

It’s a fact, exercise releases feel-good endorphins, which in turn, boost our overall mood. Feeling stressed and anxious? A walk will help clear your mind.

3. Walking gives you energy

It doesn’t quite seem logical, but walking actually increases energy levels. By boosting circulation, you’re effectively supplying every cell in your body with more oxygen. Flashback to those science equations too? We’re feeling more alert already!

4. Walking improves brain function

The foot’s impact on a hard surface increases the flow of blood to the brain which may help in the prevention of Dementia.
